Maytag & Whirlpool Washer Error Code LF / F8 E1: Water Valve Test & Screen Fix

Verified Fault Diagnostic LF / F8 E1
Verified by OEM Engineering Specification W10144820
Official Fault Meaning: Long Fill / Low Water Flow (Water level pressure transducer did not register target rise within 13 minutes)
Most Likely Cause: Sediment, rust, or mineral buildup clogging the mesh inlet screens; kinked water supply hose; or burned-out dual water valve solenoid.
Repair Difficulty: Beginner DIY
Estimated Time: 15–20 minutes
Required Tools: Needle-nose pliers, channel-lock pliers, small cup of white vinegar, multimeter, bucket
Applicable Models: Maytag MVWB, MVWC series; Whirlpool WTW, Cabrio series (WTW5000DW, MVWC565FW)
Immediate Safe Action / Quick Reset

Turn off water shutoffs. Disconnect cold and hot fill hoses. Use needle-nose pliers to pull out the internal mesh screens and rinse mineral grit. Clear kinked lines.

Error code LF (Long Fill) or alphanumeric code F8 E1 (No Water Detected Entering Machine) appears when the washer has commanded its cold or hot water inlet solenoid valves to open, but the pressure sensor fails to register water entering the tub after 13 minutes. The machine pauses the cycle and sounds a continuous audible alert.

Over 70% of LF errors are not caused by defective electronics. Instead, municipal water sediment or well-water mineral scale has accumulated across the fine wire mesh filter screens inside the threaded hose connection ports.

Step 1: Inspecting & Cleaning the Inlet Sediment Screens

⚠️ Turn Off Water Supply

Turn off both hot and cold dual supply faucets before disconnecting hoses to prevent high-pressure flooding in your laundry area.

  1. Shut off the hot and cold wall valves.
  2. Unscrew the female brass water hose couplings from the plastic intake ports on the rear of the washer. Keep a small bucket nearby to catch hose residual water.
  3. Look directly into the two brass-threaded inlet valve ports. You will see fine blue/white mesh filter screens.
  4. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gently pinch the center plastic tab of each screen and pull straight outward.
  5. Soak the screens in a small cup of warm white vinegar for 10 minutes to dissolve calcium deposits. Brush clean with an old toothbrush and rinse with water.
  6. Push the clean screens back into the intake ports until firmly seated. Reconnect hoses and test cycle.

Step 2: Solenoid Resistance Testing with a Multimeter

If the screens are completely clean and both wall shutoff valves have strong water pressure, one of the two electromagnetic solenoid coils on the valve body has likely burned open.

Valve Solenoid Coil Expected OEM Reading Condition / Action
Cold Water Coil Terminals 750 Ω to 1,200 Ω (0.75k–1.2k Ω) PASS: Solenoid windings intact.
Hot Water Coil Terminals 750 Ω to 1,200 Ω (0.75k–1.2k Ω) PASS: Solenoid windings intact.
Either Coil (Infinite / O.L.) Infinite Ohms FAIL: Solenoid burned open. Valve cannot open. Replace assembly.
Either Coil (0.0 Ω Short) 0.0 Ω to 5 Ω FAIL: Internal short circuit. Replace assembly.
