A Maytag Commercial Technology (MCT), Centennial, or Bravos washer that fills with a burst of water, clicks underneath, and remains indefinitely stuck on the green “Sensing” status light is experiencing a drive-train synchronization failure. The washer’s central computer cannot determine whether the transmission is geared for agitation or spinning.
In 9 out of 10 cases, this symptom corresponds to diagnostic fault codes F7 E1 (Tachometer Speed Sensor Error) or F7 E5 (Shifter State Fault), caused by a failing Shift Actuator mounted underneath the tub.
What the Shift Actuator Does
Beneath the washing machine drum, a small red-and-white plastic box called the Shift Actuator houses two critical components:
- Synchronous Motor: Physically shifts the plastic cam (the splutch) between wash agitation mode and high-speed spin mode.
- Optical Tachometer Sensor: An infrared sensor that reads a slotted disc on the motor pulley to calculate drum rotation speed down to the millisecond.
When the internal motor burns out or detergent scum coats the optical eye, the control board halts the washer on “Sensing” to prevent transmission shredding.
Testing the Shift Actuator with a Multimeter
Unplug the machine before tilting it backward. Do NOT lay the washer completely flat on its back; water from the balance ring may flood the control board.
- Tilt the washer backward 45 degrees and prop securely.
- Locate the shift actuator mounted adjacent to the drive belt and main pulley.
- Remove the two 5/16″ hex screws and unplug the 6-pin wire harness.
- Set your multimeter to the Ohms (Ω) setting.
- Measure across Pins 2 and 3 on the shift actuator (the synchronous motor terminals):
| Test Terminals | Component | Normal OEM Value | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pins 2 to 3 | Shift Actuator Motor | 2,000 Ω to 3,000 Ω (2k–3k Ω) | PASS: Motor coil is functional. |
| Pins 2 to 3 | Shift Actuator Motor | Open Loop (O.L.) / 0 Ω | FAIL: Internal synchronous motor burned. Replace actuator. |
| Splutch Teeth | Plastic Cam Slider | Sharp, square teeth | If teeth are rounded/stripped, replace splutch kit #W10721967. |
Running the Automatic Calibration Mode
Whenever you replace the shift actuator or the washer experiences an off-balance shake, you MUST execute the calibration routine:
- Ensure the tub is 100% empty and the lid is closed.
- Turn the cycle knob: 1 Left, 3 Right, 1 Left, 1 Right within 6 seconds.
- Turn the dial clockwise until ONLY the Rinse LED is illuminated.
- Press START.
- Step away. The washer will automatically actuate the motor, calibrate the splutch positions, and unlock the lid after approximately 2.5 minutes.
